The neurodivergent antics i mentioned in the previous week’s letter also apply here, though outside of interacting with your dad they are much more comedy-focused. thanks to the fans who made the offline archive of homestuck stuff x) hell, i had to install homestuck onto my mac. when looking for a webcomic to read end up accessing the site, the old site which all of homestuck used to be hosted on before flash’s breakdown and other business-related factors made it impossible to access on the site. (as a side note to further drive this awareness home, the story is also aware of itself! egbert and co. this couldn’t be more snes final fantasy if it tried.Īnd while this panel doesn’t play like a video game (when the buttons are each clicked, they play an animation and there is no concrete win state as a video game might), it shows an immediate hunger to take advantage of the computer, a medium that allows for a distinctly comprehensive amount of media consumption, whether visual, audio, interactive or literary! but now we see more!Īs egbert tries to reclaim the sburb videogame he desires from his dad while keeping contact and birthday celebrations to a minimum, we get our first interactive segment! the framing of this shot, with ebgert on one side, his dad on the other and both being semi-crouched alongside two buttons appearing above egbert’s head shows the hand of andrew hussie, the creator. up until now we have had occasional animations and the odd piece of music, and we see a truly incredible example of this when egbert first confronts his dad in bowler-and-pipe costume a chiptune waltz plays in the background while dad is baking that eases the vibe, completely contrasting with the particularly loud heartbeat evoking tension alongside the fading in and out of black. The immediate thing to address is that we see some of the basic principles of homestuck as an everything medium of storytelling come into play. adding to this even further is the ARTIFACT OF CONFECTION (birthday cake), which i hilariously misread as ARTIFACT OF CONNECTION and in the process made myself more sad. The main conflict of today’s homestuck is egbert trying to get the highly-anticipated sburb video game from his dad, and immediately can i just say? i relate to this? and i feel sorry for egbert’s dad here! trying desperately to connect with his son while not understanding his neurodivergence fully is something that does leave a bit of sadness in one’s heart even as we sympathise with john for having a dad that doesn’t understand him. The homestuck chronicles continue! we have now stopped just before john egbert (and presumably his friends who he talks to via the aol-esque pesterchum) has submerged himself into the game proper, but we have already been presented with a few other prominent ideas packed with pathos and further potential down the line.
